Engine randomly dies

I won't try and bore everyone here but i need to be exact, I am having a problem where sometimes (Like today) when I am driving and coming to a stop I put my foot down on the clutch and whilst breaking the engine "stalls" the only sign i have of this is the battery/oil light (can't remember which) comes on. There are also time when i am merrily cruising along and then the engine gives and the only sign i have that time is i feel the car slowing (becasue it is in gear adn the engine doesn't respond immediatly when i givethe accelerator a tap; for both instacnes i havce found that if i coast and then pump the accelerator 80% of the time it comes to life again, sometimes i actually have to coast and turn the key off and then back on. Can anybody help identify the problem, I was once told its the electrics in the fusebox, but im not too sure. Any and all advice would be appreciated. you can post a reply here or mail me on vik@vallabh.co.uk

I would say you have a classic case of fuel starvation not an electrical problem .

Time to start reading the old posts on the fuel system to give you an idea where to start .

Start at the simple and work your way methodically through the system . How is your filler neck , when was the fuel filter changed ?

I'd replace the fuel filter first, easy job just need new filter and 2 19mm spanners, save yourself a few quid and do it yourself.

Does the car have a sunroof? as they are prone to letting in water which usually trickles down on top of the fusebox and causes all sorts of hassle

So many dubs so little time, so much rust

Sort of! it is a relay in the bottom of the barrell NOT on the fuse box.

changed it and it cured my problem!

This sounds like the problem I'm having with my mk1 clipper. It only cuts out when I press the clutch but the battery and oil switches light up - it only seems to be revving at about 2-400 though. I've been told my carb is faulty so putting on a new one tomorrow - I'm hoping this will solve it and will let you know…
