Engine Number 1.8 16v 1983

Can anyone please tell me where the engine number should be stamped on the block of a Golf 1.8 16v 1983 engine?

no 16v on that year unless you have a 16s .. only 8v which would be a dx code.  

and the code should be below plug 3 on the block..

Its a mk1 Gti with a 1.8 16V engine replacement. I'm not sure what year the engine is but its definately a DOHC 1.8 16v

if its a 1.8 16v it'll be kr or pl. most likely kr though. unless you have a SEAT ADL lump in there, even more rare! the basic engines are all same kr/pl/adl. just the cams that differ.

why do you need to know? are you after spares or is it just so you can put the number on the log book?

I needed it for the log book so that it all married up.
