84 GLi Convertible will have a 1.8 injection engine, exactly the same as the 1.8 Mk1 GTI.

It should do! Its more/less exactly the same

Correct - assuming you mean passenger side = left of car. (Assumes RHD)

False - on all standard Mk1 GTI hatchbacks the fuel lines, metering head and airbox are on the left. (On mk2, they have been relocated to the right)

Are you aware the engine mounts are in a different position? Basically, you have a number of issues to additionally overcome, because you're doing a 'small block' to 'big block' conversion. Top tip:

DON'T BUILD A CAR YOU CAN BUY!!!!!

If you're doing the engine conversion simply because your engine is worn or broken, and you need to swap the engine, then find an equivalent engine eg 1.1 or 1.3 small block (some Polos also came with the same engine so could be donors).

If you're doing it for more power….find a Golf GTI instead, way less hassle. There is a long list of differences of engine and non-engine-related things, which will be important.
