Engine Identifcation

Is there any way of telling what the exact spec is on the engine. All i know is my car is a 1.8 gti 8v. But i was told when purcashing that the engine was from a scirocco. Are they exatly the same? or are there differences? I am thinking they have engine codes on them some where.

Wanting to do head gasket and cam belt, but i need correct parts, any help would be much appricated.

the engine number is just under the head on cylinder 3 below the water outlet

when you by enigne pars give them the engine number that why it wont be wrong

bu i thin the engine in the scirroco was the same but i don't know for sure

Cant Seem to find anything there

as you look at the engine on the under the water outlet with the top radiator hose

look under that on the block you should see a flat section and on that is the engine number

might need a bit of a scrub to see it

I will have to take it up to my unit and have a good strip down, see if i can see anything. As you say it may need a good scrub.

What code should i be looking for ?
