1.8 turbo conversion into an auto clipper ?

was wondering if anyone has fitted the 1.8 turbo engine from newer vws into a Cabrio with an auto box and kept the auto with the turbo engine ..am sick of all the probs with the 1.8 carb engine have replaced all the fuel system new carb etc and the though of just having a modern engine with none of the hot starting starter motor issues really appeals and would be happy to spend the dosh having it done but would want to keep the car an auto any helps appreciated am Near Glasgow in Scotland so can anyone point me in the rite direction of where to go…can travel

biggest issue is how to hook up the auto cables to the 20v tb. unless you mean you want the20v auto box as well? if so im not sure if they bolt into a mk1 chassis or not, but the wirign side willbe just as much work as convertign the engien loom

yea i thought using the original auto would be a bit of an issue. i wonder if theres any other engines with more power that will be able to just bolt onto the 3 speed auto

anything 1.6-2.0 will bolt up, as i say the issue is the linakges, you'll need to find the parts to convert your chosen engine management to auto. if you stay with carb management then you can use all the old bits, this will work with 1.6-2.0 8v engines fine. if you go injection then you'll have a harder time of it as not may injection cars out there with auto, but passats are a good place to start

As my question was similar I thought I'd post here rather than starting a new thread.

I'm looking for a cabby and whilst reseaching I've realised that a lot of clippers are Carb (although I'm looking for small bumper GTI)
My question is how easy is it to fit a late 90 spec GTI engine & gearbox plus dig injection system in?? reason is I scrapped my late mk2 but kept eng, gearbox, airbox and complete wiring loom

Thanks

pretty simple really, shame its a 90spec though as if it was pre-90 the loom would plug into the fusebox you woudl just need to tweak the lengths a bit. but tbh its not hard really as the mk2 ecu loom splits off from the bay loom, you just need to feed the 5 pin plug in the bay with what it needs so cut that out of the old MK2 loom and add it into the cabrio loom once you buy it.

then you'll have to add the fuel pump wiring which is either a case of get one from a gti or add a pin to the fusebox plug E pin 14.

next up you need to give it fuel, since its a digi engien no need to run the k-jet high pressure stuff rubber fuel injection hose will do (id go with overbraid for extra protection) you never know the mk2 pipes may fit even?  then you'll need a post-84 cab, rocco or g40 shape polo lifter pump and fuel reservoir and finally a main pump. options for that are polo gt or g40, or any mk1 injection with an m12x1.5 barbed 7-8mm adaptor threaded on the end.

exhaust wise mk1 1.6-1.8 all work but try to get a proper 6 bolt flange gti manifold and downpipe as they flow better

Many thanks for this info
I saved everything from the mk2 even the 6x bolt exhaust and manifold  ;)
Looking at a couple of cabby's tomorrow and all are GTI's
Looks like I might have a nice winter project on the way with an engine rebuild and swap

mk2 downpipe wont go on a mk1, the manifold isnt right either but if you chop up and weld half a mk1 downpipe to mk2 with a kink added you can use it. no point though really when you could just buy a standard mk1 setup :)

my mk1 cabby 16v had a custom downpipe i found off the bay of e, pics in my thread:
