Engine conked out and water spurting?
Sorry if this has been asked before but trawled throught the search facility and can't get an answer
The car has been stood for around 2 years now and have just got it running, topped the coolant up and started fine, left it running for about 5 mins then it stated sluttering and conked out, water then poured back out of the coolant tank as I had left the lid off to make sure no air was trapped. Could trapped air be the likely cause or is it H/G there is a small amount of gunge in the oil cap but not a lot so put that down to condensation, any advice welcome.

Did you fill up the coolant expansion tank to the brim, or fill it to the full level?

filled to the level, it didn't have any coolant at all though as it was emptied when the engine was swapped over. water was hot though after 5 mins.

Heater on too?
Well, I'd just top it up with water and keep going, until no more air comes out and the level has settled down to a constant. Air (bubbles) can & do come up, but not normally vigourously enough to spill out of the expansion tank, if the car is idling.
The fact that it conked out is a separate issue, but with it not been run for 2 years it will definitely need a tune up etc.

Thanks Paul, i'll leave it running for a bit if I can get it started again, I know the plug going to the distributor is a bit knackered and I suppose after 2 years it could do with a service :redfaced:

give the engien a rev now & again when bleeding it to get the water flowing round nice. check thin hose to top of tank, should spray out water & bubbles when you rev it. if not waterpump is bust, or the thin pipe or rad is blocked and system will really struggle to self-bleed.
the water will boil if you leave it long enough, keep an eye and switch the engien off and fit cap when you see the water start to rise/boil
