emissions sky high

hi all newbie here ive got an golf mk1 gti cabby extremmly good condition for its age but failed mot on emmisions its also running very high at 2000 rpm nothing is stuck but smells real rich co was 9.2 which i know is very high any one know how this can be fixed and wanna have it ready for when we see sum sun hahaha thanks in advance  karl

adjust the mixture......

start by trying to reduce the idle. the adjustment screw is on the back of the throttle body. if its very easy to turn the oring may have gone and is winding itself out.I bought a big box of orings and used the closest fit, problem solved. once the idle is back down to 900rpm or so get the co rechecked, if its high ask them to reset it to 1.5%. you need a long 3mm allen key for this

But you answer just about every technical question there is about the MK1.  

I'll be honest here, often I find myself just looking down the posts to find where you've answered.

But what on earth did your parents feed you when you were young?
Maybe large portions of liquidised MK1 Technical Manuals, washed down with about 30 years of experience.
