electronic ignition question

yesterday I was at the breakers and bought a electronic dizzy of a golf cabrio from 1988 with I think has the same 1,8 DX engine as my GTI.

The dizzy I bought looks as new, but it has a green rubber O-ring fitted just below the gasket that goes between the dizzy and engine block… :dontknow:  Should I remove this O-ring before fitting it?

The number on the new dizzy is 026 905 205 AK and the old one is the same but ends in letter R

many thanks,

yal

The O-Ring is a good thing, leave it there.  It just helps keep oil from seeping out under the dizzy.  You still get metal to metal contact when you tighten everything down, so it does not change the location of anything.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply :D

Does it make difference that my new dizzy has different letters behind the vw code?? Both are 026 905 205 but the old one says R and the new one AK. The both look identical, but I dont know if the advance mechanism advances more or less degrees.

I went to vw to order the paper gasket that goes between the dizzy and engine block but they dont sell it anymore!

About 10 years ago I changed my golf GLS to electronic ignition (I was fed up with contact breakers) and I then bought the paper gasket at vw which would prevent the dizzy to get stuck with the engine block.

Does nobody use these gaskets anymore??
