EG to DX engine swap?

Hello all im a very proud owner of a 1982(Y) GTI.
It should have a 1800 dx engine in it but for some reason in the past it has been changed for a 1600eg lump.
Could anyone tell me what mods need to be done(engine mounts etc) to return it to a 1800
Thanks in advance Richie

not all y reg mk1's were 1.8 in fact there may have been more 1.6 y reg's
i'm pretty sure it's a straight swap bar the radiator hose.

According to the V5 it should defo be 1800.

EV engine code is a mk2 1800 injection engine. Mk1 1600 engine would be an EG code.

Yeah, my 83 GTI always said it was a 1600 on the V5, it was definitely an 1800 and always had been.

In short a 1600 injection to 1800 injection is minimal hassle. Engine mounts etc all the same - the main external difference between the 1600 and 1800 is the rad hose exits between spark plugs 1 and 2 on the 1600 and 3 and 4 on the 1800. The only differences I can think of are the gearbox, MFA in 1800, fuel metering head, rad top hose and possibly ignition. It all depends on what bits were swapped when the 1600 were put in.

The gearboxes are compatible, but have different ratios - you'll need to find the gearbox code. The 1800 should have an MFA computer in the dash, this may have been left in or swapped. The 1600 had a different fuel metering head, not sure if compatible, and on the last ones had electronic ignition.

You can always verify the original engine type from the chassis year 1600's were fitted up till the model CW. Mk1 1800 was in the DW and EW chassis.

all the ancillaries and injection/fuelling are compatible. the 1.6's had 5 speeds later on and were the same ratio's as the 1.6 5 speed. early 1.6 had points, but this will run a 1.8 fine. not all 1.8's had mfa's.

The 1600 five speed boxes were FD or FK code and have different ratios to the 1800 5 speed box which is a 7G and 9A for the campaign. Thought MFA was developed and introduced with the 1800 engine :dontknow:

Thank you for the advice folks, some of you are in the wrong job you should be employed at the factory in Wolfsburg  .Ive checked the original VW service book that came with the car and it does say engine code DX.

yes, but we're not talking a huge difference, to the effect of having to change the box and engine. i could be wrong about the mfa's but i have seen a few 1.8's without the trip computer. possible they all had different dash'
s fitted.?

All 1800 gearboxes in Mk1 FI cars were built for MFA, but the only difference is the reverse light (in the 1800, its a 6 pin gear indication thing) switch. If it doesn't have the MFA on the dashboard, its probably a 1600 which has been fitted with an 1800 engine.

If you fit the 1800 'box too, then wiring up the reversing light is the only issue and its pretty easy, you simply crimp on smaller female spade connectors and attach them to the relevant terminals on the switch.

No not unusable difference (from memory the 1600 box pulls about 300 more rpm at 70mph) just depends on if you want to return completely to original spec. I was wrong earlier, the ratios are actually the same in the all the boxes apart from 5th in the 9A, it's the the final drive ratio that differs.
