early or late sump???

hi ive got a mk2 golf 8v 1800 gti engine fitted in my mk1 caddy. ive got 13 inch wheels and coilovers fitted, so car is quite low. the sump hangs down very low and want some way of giving me more clearance. Doing a search on the forum, there is a shallower sump and then in around 1987 vw changed to a larger sump, but im unsure of the age of the engine so dont know which sump is fitted. is there anyway of identyfying between the two different types? does anybody know the dimensions of the two different sumps? also if i have got the larger sump fitted can i just change it for the shallower one or do i need to change the dipstick and pickup pipe?? cheers in advance, james.

Not 100% sure but I think you need to change the 3 items together. The shallow (early) stype sump is kind of V shaped at the bottom and the other one is flattish at the bottom???? Not 100% sure on anything these days, my fading memory!

ok cool i think ive got the later sump then,anyone know about the dipstick and pickup?

dipstick and pickup are the same
