dumb Newb question-engine size

Just picked up a karmmen convertible with a fuel injected engine .
I would love to know how to tell the difference between the engine sizes as here in France there not mentioned on the cartre gris(V5 doc).
it also has an annoying intermittant ticking problem which sounds like a loose tappet but only happens now and again and is coming from the the top of the engine.
Also can anyone reccomend a manuel for it (anything better than haynes)

The easiest way is to look at the engine code then look it up by googling "volkswagen engine code".

Ticking - probably a sticky hydraulic tappet

Don't know about manuals, I use Haynes to look up torque values.
