Distributor Part Number

Post

Hey to all. New here, gonna write somethin in the introductory section soon but for now I do have a possibly studid question.
Driving a MK1 Conv. 1.8 GTi, DX Engine code as u would guess. However, the fitted distributor has the part number 026 905 205 AC. Volkswagens spare part sytem tells me that the right distributor is the 026 805 205 H and that the distributor fitted in my car is for the carburretor engine code EX. I have to say this information is from Germany and I am slightly confused now. Did some preowner fit the wrong distributor or where the DX engines fitted with the 026 905 205 AC distributor in GB? If so, why? This distributor is for an carburretor engine, thus the ignition timing doesn't advance as far as it does in the injection engine distributors which means the engine doens't reach it's designed power…but than the DX is given with 112 bhp fpr GB just as well as it is in Germany?

Completely lost about this…. never had to find out about a part number that was country specific before so I don't really know where to start….

Besides, what ignition timing do u guys have? 0° for 95 fuel or the original 6° which actually means u have to get 98 Octane which isn't available…so 97 premium dreadfully expensive?!?!???

Cheers!

Out of curiosity how do you know the advance is less on a carb EX distributor?

Can't help with the part numbers though sorry!

Hi,
because an old VW-mechanic and a VW-crazy guy both told me so independantly. I tend to believe that and even if it's not true, fact is that the AC Distributor is not for the DX engine refering to for example the VW classic parts system.

Anyways, seems I have to drive to a local VW dealer and ask them to look it up in their computer system. Even if the distributor isn't avaiable any more they can still tell me what is supposed to be fitted….that is if they want to.

yup 026 905 205 AC is a carb dizzy, the ignition map isnt right for a gti plus you have to time it differently (18deg BTDC with vac line connected, GTI is 6deg BTDC vac line disconnected)

someone has fitted the wrong dizzy, the UK DX engine cars used the same dizzy as german DX cars :)

Hey rubjonny,

cheers for the answer. The VW-dealer wanted the full engine code and what not and always took them ages to answer to my mails.

Now I have one question left. The 6deg BTDC is for 98 Octance fuel, right? Which isn't available…at least I never saw it. So 0deg BTDC is the right setting for using 95 Octane than as far as I know?!?

you might get away with it as modern fuels are a fair bit better than they were back in the 80s, but basically with k-jet and carbs you dial in as much advance as you can till it pinks, then back off, drive it and listen for pinking. if it does pink then back off the timing a little bit more, rince and repeat :)

when you're looking for replacement dizzys put the part numbers up here and we can check them for you, as there were a lot of different numbers fort the gti over the years which got superceeded

I could currently get hold of a 026 805 205 H. How about that for a May 1984 DX ?

I cant find that one in etka, are you sure its not 026 905 205 H you mean, as that one is listed for DX? I also have 026 905 206 A, 026 905 205 AK and 026 905 205 AA listed :)

Ooops….mistyped there. yes… I mean the 026 905 205 H.
Just got answer from the Volkswagen dealer as well. They say the same (after I was able to explain that DX is the full engine code).

So, that's sorted out. Anyone offering such a distributor? Could trade in a perfectly working 026 905 205 AC after I get the new one (need the car daily).
