Distributor doesn't fit.........

Hi all,

New to this so please be gentle (also recovering Glasto blues so am feeling fragile).

Basically started putting back together my mk1 campaign but………. (baring in mind it pretty much came to me in boxes of bits) the 2 dizzies do not fit….:ocf_emoticons__BangHead:So what I wanted to know is what are the differences between a mk1 and mk2 dizzie, are they any diff. as i'm now starting to question what engine is actually under the bonnet as the previous owner is a bit of a nob jock and quite frankly clueless.

This is the last bit of the puzzle before I know whether ther engine is good so any pics or guidance would be much appreciated!

Thanks again

You can look on the engine block, just below spark plug 3 and it should give you an engine code, its the first 2 letter you need eg I,ve a DX engine.
From that code you should be able to tell which dissy fits.

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Ah brilliant mate thanks. I'll have a gander later on tonight.

Just annoying as one of them is brand new and never used!!! The second has a bit of wear but would of been ok. Hoping that no other problems come about just yet as its early doors! ha ha

mk1 and mk2 dizzys are same fitment, but 2.0 are bigger. how is it not fitting? too big for hole or it wont slot down fully? becasue they are a real git to fit if the timign belt is on as you have to line up the teeth to mesh with the intermediate shaft teeth, plus at the same time line up the slot so it fits into the oil pump drive
