Dipstick length?
Does anyone know how long the gti dipstick should be? Bit worried that the dipstick is too short, or there is way too little oil in my engine!
Cheers,
Chris

Is it a 1.8 or 1.6? Not sure if they are different lenghts but willing to take the dip stick out of my 1.8 gti dx engine and measure for you.

Hi,
It's 19.5 cm from the bottom of the dipstick to the lip of the plastic cover bit that will sit on top of the dip stick hole. So if you look at the dipstick hole the metal rod should go down 19.5cm from that point. I'm not 100% sure if this varies from engine to engine and just checked my haynes very quickly which doesnt specify lenght from what i could find. Also the dip stick should have a couple of kinks in it.

Hi, this is my dipstick I'm not too sure what engine you have or how old the car is but this is from my 83 cabby gti DX. 34 cm sounds very long. The length I mentioned is from the tip to where the plastic bit bulges out to it's largest diameter. You have me a bit worried now as to wheter mine is correct as such a big difference in lenghts lol. Just been having a look on the internet and there seems to be quite a difference with dipsticks and replacements ones, so you might have a replacement one.

You must have a very forgiving missus if that is on your carpet!?!
Thanks very much for the help, really appreciate it!
Think I am sorted now, slightly different engine, slightly different dipstick.
Thanks again

I did give it a good clean before photoing on the rug lol. Glad you sorted anyway. Did wonder if there would be a difference.

FWIW, the VW parts catalog lists the following for the dipstick:
Part #027115611C
That dipstick is listed for all of the following engines: DX, KT, EW, EX, HN, JH, RE, 2H. The original round dipstick was replaced with the flat version in the late '80s, and is a direct replacement for the round version. Here are the specs for the flat version:

no too little. think about it
the plastic tube commonly breaks and is cheap to buy new. as aid pretty mcuh all the dipsticks are the same its just the handle thats a bit different. mk2 and mk3 ones will fit and easily stolen from the scrapyard

disagree, if the plastic funnel makes the dipstick sit further out, then without it, the dipstick would over-read/sit too low

without the funnel, the dipstick will sit deeper in the sump. so level would also be lower

The dipstick will sit 'lower' without the tube therefore take less oil to reach the 'max' mark.
You would only have way to much oil if you somehow made the dipstick sit higher.
That way it would take more oil to reach the max point
