cutting out

ive just got my hands on a 1.8 gti that has been stored for the last 18 months with very little petrol.

ive since put half a tank in but every now and then it cuts out as if its got no fuel.

am i right in thinking the tank has just got loads of rubbish in that needs to be flushed out or is there more to this problem?

Could be a number of things if the car has sat a while. However, unleaded fuel goes off quickly so it could be just this. You may have to flush tank if there was a lot left in from before.

I'd flush the system right through - could be water in the fuel.  And get some injector cleaner in it too.

Hi

Mine was garaged for 10 years and I had similar problems - more time out of action than yours but could be similar. The fuel does go off and will not protect the fuel lines from rust over long periods.

- Flush fuel line and add new fuel and injector cleaner (as said),
- Check fuel filter / pump,
- Check fuel lines have not rusted,
- Check petrol tank has not rusted,
- Any rust/ crap in system and you may have change the fuel filter again.

Mine turned out to be a rusty fuel tank. Two new GSF tanks did not fit but I got an original one from VW even though they said they were obsolete.

Good Luck
Mark
