cutting out problem

posted this topic in chat by mistake!!!

I'm having problems with my gti cutting out. The symptoms are:

car runs fine too and from work every day 2-3 miles
take it out on a run & it cuts out (although not every time)
turns over fine. but will not fire
take lead off distributor cap and no spark
leave it for half an hour(ish) starts up no problem

I fitted a new coil at the weekend and took it out on a run no problems
Went for a spin tonight and it cut out again. Waited 30 mins. & started

Can anybody help ?. Any ideas would be much appreciated

I have read a few posts about poor running being down to the distributor but wouldn't there still be a spark from the coil even if the dizzy was faulty???

have u changed the ht leads? sometimes after running for a while the leads pack in due to heat or they might be resting against the engine and the insulation on them gets v hot, might be causing a short. if it cuts out again put a volt tester on the wires going onto the coil. they might be the prob. hynes manual will tell u what the voltage should be on the wires for ur high and low outputs.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorted problem ….touch wood

Dodgy connection on the small three pin plug that goes to the dizzy

Did 50 odd miles on Sunday not a hitch

Cheers!
