I've done a lot of development on these heads lately, in fact it's still ongoing. They work very well out of the box, a fair bit better than a std type head in terms of flow…they are almost as good as a ported std valve GTi head, so you'll have a power gain to start with as well as bringing the carbs away from the heat of the exhaust manifold. The come up well too when ported, even on the std valve size.
However, if you fit a heat shield between the two manifolds at the back you wont have a problem with the current set up…I've run race cars like that for years without an issue, and they're fine on the road too when theres a lot of heat build up & very little moving/cooling air.
The crossflow head is a good step forward though… you'll need a different inlet manifold as the angle and shape is totally different to yr current set up…I'm in the middle of developing one of those too for DCOE type fitment.
Are you planning on running it on a std 1800 block?

…you need to have it welded to replicate the original style of return hole to match your block so it looks like this…
Use the MLS (multi layer steel) type gasket if it's going to be a high compression engine, or a good quality fibre type gasket from Elring or Victor Reinz will do a good job if it's a road engine.
I'll be looking into the inlet manifold fairly soon on a customers project engine, so that will be available early in the new year.
