Correct torque for rocker cover nuts?

I am fed up with the smell of burning oil and my new rocker gasket has arrived at VW today.

Was thinking it might be time to invest in a torque wrench.

Is there a specified torque for the 8 nuts?

Supposed to be 7Ib/ft which is very low. I've got two torque wrenchs and the lowest setting on either is 10Ib/ft. In the end torqued to 10Ib/ft, then felt tightness, rolled back a bit and did up no quite so tight - very scientific  . Gone two weeks and about 300 miles - no leaks so far.

Of course you could just tighten by hand in which case they need to be about so tight

Or - about 1/2 a turn before the threads strip!

Ok, all changed and no leaky leaky so far.

Turns out when I took it off I also loosened one of the studs slightly and didn't notice so that's why it leaked!

I bought a torque wrench, 10Nm is about 7lbft as markone says.

Never used a torque wrench before so that was fun.

Without a wrench, It's bascially tighten them until you feel resistance, then about a quarter of a turn.

…with a wrench it's click.

one of my best buys was getting a torque wrench! was a little expensive though at ?50 for 1 tool if you ask me but does the job!

Gotta agree, torque wrench is a must for the piece of mind of knowing things are tightened up as they should be and removes the guesswork  8) .

I have two torque wrenches, a large Clarke one that I rarely use and a smaller low range Halfords Pro one which was less than 50 quid. The Halfords pro low range one is the one I use 90% of the time and it has a really nice twist grip lock setting and easy to read scale. Lifetime warranty, 5-60 Nm range and comes with a calibration cert too - buy one you won't regret it…..

I had same problem - really should buy torque wrench!

I have a small pool of oil develops on top of the inlet manifold between cylinders 1 and 2. I don't think the nuts for the cam cover are too loose but assume this is the only place the oil can be leaking from? :dontknow:

Perhaps I twisted the gasket or something but I really think it was straight!

If I recall my O-level physics, oil can only catch fire from excessive and prolonged temperature rather than just naked flame alone.

I remember the teacher (was a bit of an idiot!) waving a bunsen burner flame over a tray of oil and commenting how it 'doesn't catch fire' However, a few minutes later it blew up in his face!
