conversion help needed
hi,
im going to be swapping my current 1.8 carb engine from my mk1 cab and was wondering what the best/cheapest/easiest conversion is.
Im not after huge power just a decent amount and a reliable engine.
If for instance a 2.0 16v gti from a mk/2/3 would fit what other parts will be needed.
I.E
Everything as well as the block
manifold
gearbox
driveshafts
ecu
loom
etc…….
and any ideas on a rough price from a garage for this work? i know they vary greatly but just a rough idea.
thanks in advance

if i was to this conversion start to finish youd be looking at ?1000 in labour
although its not a hard conversion its time consuming
your best bet would be to get a gti cabby as a starting point as your going to need a gti tankwith pumps ect

thanks
but since i already have a cab with a 1.8 carb engine getting a gti isnt something i want to do.
is there an easier conversion which requires less things to change??

to put anything other than a carb engine in is going to require a new tank with pumps iirc
you can get the tanks cheap pain to swap as the rear beam has to come out
it all depends on where the fuel feed pipe comes out of the tank if its at the bottom you could possibly get away with a low pressure efi pump then run a mk3 engine

so are there any possible carb conversions?
only reason i ask is that the engine in there just doesnt run right. It seems a bit gutless and its done over 150k so thought i would just change it.
what about the mk3 20. 8v engines? or are they injected?

What's wrong with the current engine? The fault might be with something else in the car (for example fuel), compounding any issues once you've done a conversion.

well i dont know if there is anything else wrong.
Currently bled the fuel tank and changed the fuel filter and lines.
Bled and changed the radiator.
Changed all plugs and the distributor
new gearbox
new clutch
Should this car be run on leaded??
The major problems are
1. from cold the car doesnt run happily and may stall unless the engine is left to run for around 1-2 minutes with someone pressing the accelerator lightly.
2. strong smell of fuel when running (possibly running rich) - having removed the k&n the choke flap? seems to be in a vertcial position?
3. when you put your foot straight down sometimes the car will splutter a little, however if you build up the revs then no issue
4. when driving it feels a little gutless. Dont get me wrong it will do 80-90 quite comfortably but between 3-4500 rpm the car seems to hold up a bit?
thanks for everyones help and advice

Well without seeing and driving the car, or checking other obvious stuff such as mixture and ignition timing, I can't say if its a little down, or well down on power. It might be that if you fixed the original motor to full operating efficiency, it will perform better?
If not, then maybe look at a GTI cabby instead of a clipper?
