Cold starts!

Hi, Sorry if this has been posted before, couln't find it!  I have a 1990 mk1 1.8 gti cab and it takes ages to start when the engine is cold!  When the car has been running recentley it starts straight away!  These engines are supposed to run really nicely and start very quickly so what could be wrong? I'm very puzzled!  Cheers Fraz

Hi,

Sorry I don't knoe the answer to the original post but I have exactly the same problem with my 1986 cab 1.8 injetion.  It takes loads of cranking when cold but will always go eventually.  I have lived with it for the last 3 years. Its ok if you have a good battery but not really ideal and will wear the starter out sooner.  It its something I would like to sort out.

me too

I've just posted a very similar thread. My cold start valve was disconnected as it 'caused problems'. Put it back on, tested fuel pressure, then changed thermo time switch as it wasn't behaving itself. Car runs fine after warm up and emissions are fine while idling. Cold starts are rubbish and there's a lag after coasting off the throttle in gear, then reapplying gas.
After a little looking around I'm either looking at leaking injectorus, WUR or metering head problem.

when starting it each time, give it full gas, im having this prob, i thought it was the cold but seems to be a lag in fuel sending when cold, although i have probs with my warm up reg, and thermostat so might just be mine it works for, give it a try!
