cold start

hi new to the site just got a 1983 mk1 golf gti that needs some tlc
and need some help wen starting car from cold it takes 4 or 5 times to get it to start wen it does start  the car runs lumpy if u use throttle the engine stalls if u leave to warm up car runs fine

checked all the injectors (5) changed fuel pump ht leads dizzy and arm
air fitter

please help  :banghead:

and does any one know a go sprayer as the people i got the car off  did a very bad job live in chelmsford essex

thank u i pull out each  injector and check if they sprayed .
if it make a differents be for i got the car 5weeks a go the car sat on someone drive for 6 year and did not move or start for that time.

How did you check the 5th injector? This is the one which is worth checking. When cold, it should spray for a variable amount of time (controlled by the Thermo Time switch).

pulled it out sat it in a cup started the car and it spayed for about 10 second and then stoped

Hmmm sounds about right. Might be worth unplugging it and seeing if starting improves. Another little trick I use, is a little custom loom, which means you can switch it on and off manually. Handy for crudely disagnosing fuel issues.

Sounds like the warm up regulator might be suspect - richens the mixture until warmed up.  Located on the front of the block.

You can check to see if there is crud as one of the unions hase a metal gauze in it;s hole.

Failing that I have good used ones.

Did the injectors weep after switching the engine off? Thats another test you should do. Its common for them to leak, causing the engine to flood ready for the next time you start the car. It will take a while for enough fuel to leak to to cause the problem, usually a couple of hours or more so if its always a problem when it might be something else.

OK, if they do weep then you can clean them by soaking them in fuel and then blasting them through with an airline. Its worked for me on a couple of cars.
