Cold start problems....How do I check the cold start valve?

I've set up my timing and now run the her on optimax.

I'm still having problems starting from cold. She usually starts second go.

How do I go about checking the cold start valve? :?

It appears to be quite straightforward - described in Haynes Manual. Do you have one before I type it all out?!!
