Cold start issue

when I go to start the gti in the morning it turns and fires straight away but will die straight away.  If i plant the throttle pedal right down when it fires then it will really struggle only doing a couple of hundred rpm for around 5 sec then will rev.  As soon as its revved i can take my foot off the pedal and its running fine idling around 1000rpm.

I was thinking this might be the 5th injector making it far to rich, perhaps even pouring fuel in instead of spraying - as putting your foot down leans the mixture doesnt it?

What does everyone think?

cheers

Leaky injectors? Search for prowlers injector test and give it a go.

Let us know how you get on.

I would pull the 5th injector and test that first. From cold it should fire for upto 12 seconds while cranking then stop. Anything else and there could be a fault with it or with the thermotime switch. Easier to do than the full injector test is all.

not hijacking your thread or anything but i am having the same problem. its like you were describing my cold starting.  i disconnected the coolant temp sender which effectively kept the 5th injector from coming on and it acted differently but not right.

i too am thinking that the spray pattern on the 5th may not be good, maybe its just pouring fuel into cylinder 1.

keep us posted and i will do the same!

It's the thermotime switch which controls the cold start injector, not the temperature sensor…

i pulled the 5th injector today and watched its spray pattern as a friend fired up the car.  the patter was very good.  it shot about 20" and atomized into a super fine mist.

that seems to kill the theory that the fifth wasnt spraying well and just dumping or pouring fuel into no 1 cylinder.

what next?

rossirvine, have you done any more troubleshooting?
thx
