Changing the sump gasket

Gotta change the sump gasket on my 1.6 GTI lump, whats the access like with the gearbox attached etc, never done it on a 8v lump, only a 16v unit and that was a pain with the box in.

Hi mate.

I had a crack at this last year as I had a pretty bad leak. There were two/three bolts that were a bit awkward to get to next to the gearbox, other than that no problem. I think i used a universal joint on my ratchet and wrapped some gaffer tape around it to hold it straight but leave some play in it…got it out ok this way but threaded one bolt putting it back in so take your time !!.

But it can be done !.

Thats what I was affraid of mate, it was the same on my old 16v and a right pain to sort out.
