Changing Head gasket -a prudent move?

Hi folks, Have been slowly renovating an 84 GTI cabrio over the last 15 months. Have run her for most weeks about 3 -8 miles but not pushed her at all during this time as wanting to check the bits I had done worked. Now ready for a good run out -but would it be wise to change the head gasket as a precaution. She seems to run okay, accelerate etc at moderate speeds but just worried that she hasnt been really put through her paces for a number of year. Is the head gasket easy to do or do I need garage technical help? Also anyone fitted a new roof and lives near Glasgow for some hints and tips??
Cheers

I wouldn't bother unless you suspect it's gone - it will either be ok or it wont, no middle ground really!

Just had mine done  mate and it frankly wouldn't bother unless you think it needs it.
