On late model cabbys there's some kind of fuel pressure solenoid, and an ECU, which is a bolt on adaption to the K-Jet mechanical injection. Note, it isn't the same as KE-Jet, it was earlier to this. Its quite rare so I'm not surprised nobody's recognised it. What year is your cabby, and does it have a cat? It might be possible to ditch it and revert to a more regular K-Jet, if there's something broken and now unobtainable.

Cheers Paul its a 93 cabbie L reg with a cat and ecu. I was told it is a north american set up and has even got the original sticker under the bonnet saying the emissions are set under canadian regulations. The garage where i took it tells me it has a KE-JET SYSTEM as well as some K-JET bits but are all factory. What would the best option be .

Tricky one - you need to retain the cat because all 1993 and on cars need them by law (and will probably fail an MoT without it, due to excess emissions). So realistically, you need to:

- repair that part
- replace it with a working one
- ditch the entire fuel injection system for another which is good enough (ie keeps the mixture closely within stoichiometric) to not hurt the cat. This might not be such a bad idea, you could probably fit a Digifant head and fuel injection system from a Mk2 8V GTI (1987 onwards).

Or you could sell the car and buy a 1992 or earlier, with good old K-Jet?

Another alternative is to replace the entire engine with one from a 1992 or older car. This would exploit a loophole in the MoT regulations surrounding emissions:

MoT Manual said

Vehicles fitted with a different engine

Test according to which is older , engine or vehicle.

eg.  A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter to prove engine age.

It seems a shame to sell it with only 52k genuine on it and the problem only occurs for 10-15 mins while warming up then it runs spot on so i might have to change the injection system or!! do a 16v transplant which was another idea. Are they as straight forward as people make out?

If you do a 16V transplant, make sure its a KR engine, which comes out of a pre 1992 car! Its straightforward if you are a good mechanic, its not if you're not, etc. Its more involved than simply removing and replacing an engine, but not massively so, and there is a good body of help/info out there.

I was also going to suggest - US E-Bay? Or a Bosch service agent?

would it be a big job to change the entire injection system with a digifant one and would it just be the metering head and fuel lines or is there a lot more to it. WHAT WOULD YOU DO ?

I don't like cats.
