timing on the dizzy, i'd get your ignition timing checked and adjusted.

Based on the sound and the high idle, I'd say it's a vacuum leak. Check all vacuum pipes.

1983 Polo CL - daily

1984 Golf G60 Syncro - sold

1989 Rallye Golf - sold

1992 Corrado G60 - crushed

1989 Polo C - chopped and crushed

1991 309 Style - crushed

The obvious thing would be, to adjust the idle speed. If the screw at the back of the throttle body is all the way in and its still high, then you can do a 'course' adjustment on the butterfly valve. It could have a vacuum leak, or other issues eg timing, but I'd first look at/adjust the idle speed in the normal way.

In reference to the whistling noise on the inlet have a look at the rubber cover on top of the fuel metering head. There is a bung which fills an orifice on here, on my golf this fell out and caused a few issues, I can't remember if it caused it to rev too much though. I think the bung is yellow but I've not got my golf with me at the mo.

Check this, if your bung is missing start the engine then put your finger over the hole and this may sort the problem (permenantly when you put  blank in). I would definatley check the idle adjustment screw; if these things don't cure your fault check the timing.

I had this.
In my case, and probably yours, it'll be the Auxiliary Air Valve (AAV). It should bleed extra air to the engine when cold to raise the idle, but they go wrong and raise the idle when warm too, leading to the problem you mention.
It's located on the back of the inlet plenum chamber, facing the bulkhead. Quite hard to see or get to, but easy to check; There's a rubber air hose, about 20mm outside diameter, leading to it round the left (as you look at it) side of the engine (offside of the car). With the engine idling (high presumably), squeeze this pipe with your fingers to close it down - you'll probably see the revs drop as you constrict the hose, and rise again as you release your grip.

In my case, unwilling to pay quite a bit for a new one, I've just clamped a jubilee clip over the hose and effectively blocked the air passage. The idle is obviously now a bit low during the warm-up phase, but it doesn't stall, and of course it's fine when warm. Worked ok for a year so far…

thank u all for the ansers i found the whistling was coming from a screw thing on the back or the inlet maifold near the top i have screwed it back in and now no noise an droped the revs down to just under 1500 rpm but it wont go any lower if u dont mind jonharmer can u put a pic on here as i cant find that hose thank u all again
