Hello,

Me and my boss are charging the cambelt on my gti cabby on saturday. hes done it a few times before on his old golfs but its been a while and he has asked for a little info.

What are the timing mark reference points on the pulleys.

also will the rocker cover need coming off.

thats about it i think.

I changed the cambelt on my 8V golf, ages ago, the timing marks are a little complicated, the top pulley is fine, think you have to line it up to the gap between the cylinder head and the rocker cover. the bottom two pulleys have to match up to each other if you know what I mean, so the two marks on the pulleys have to be in line.

It was a while ago that I did it so probably best waiting for someone to confirm this!

im new on this site and have just done mine the easy way is to align the cam pulley with the the top of the tin cover take top of distributor and align rotor arm with notch for no 1 cylinder then take the plug out of the bell housing to align tdc on the flywheel and that is the engine timed up.But i had to jack the engine up with the drivers side mount loose to get the tension-er off and on and also had to wedge a srcew driver between water pump pulley and crank pulley to remove water pump pulley unless you want  to pay £20 for vw  water pump pulley tool, hope that helps.doing it this way you dont have to worry about the crank pulley and the distributor ones alignment and its easier to see the marks.

RIP
