Cam sproket removal

Can any one give me any advice on removing the cam sproket from the shaft so I can change the oil seal. Currently have the camshaft off the head.
Have tried holding it in the vice and using a long bar but so far had no joy.

As I guess you have already figured out it is best to break the bolt loose befor removing the camshaft, but hind sight as they say. . . I have done it the way you tried as a last resort, always feared damage being done to the cam, so the other way I do it may not work, but: Using an old belt, wrap it around the cam gear and pull the slack through the jaws of a vise. Close the vise on the belt and then try to break the bolt loose. It is kind of like using one of those rubber things you grip a tight bottle lid with to take them off.

Think I may reassemble the motor then remove the sproket before I do any damage.

Once I have the cam back on the head and on the car whats the best way of locking the cam to break the tension on the bolt, and dumb as it may sound I presume it's a standard thread and not left handed?

A length of flat bar with two prongs thru it to act as a counterhold is what i use.

Using the belt to try and hold it may strip the teeth off it or slip and injure yourself.

Have a look at this for an idea of what to make up, it neednt be this "fancy" as long as itll grip the sprocket .

Try this:

Success!!!

I knocked up a tool similar to that in the first link and it worked a treat, once again thanks for the info.

Should be ready for MOT in the next week with a bit of luck.
