Cam advance or retard to move power down rev range?
Got a 1.6 eg gti with a kent gs2 cam. The engine comes on cam at around 5000rpm and I want to drop that down the range a bit. Should I be looking to advance or retard the cam timing?
Got a vernier on there to make it easy and I guess I could just go trial and error but if anyone knows the answer it would save me a bit of time.
Thanks
Alex

Cheers wooders. Been out for a few trial and error runs. Can't say I noticed much difference when changing the cam. Found that the previous owner had stripped two of the bolts though First time I have had them undone. Guess I could try and tap them to a 7mm - was only cheap anyway.
I have advanced the ignition a bit and it pulls far more smoothly from low down now. Before I had nothing until 2000 rpm, now I can pull from 1500 rpm in 4th no problems…
Will get it set up properly at a rolling road eventually - just wanted to get it as good as possible for now.

FOR IGNITION CLOCKWISE TO RETARD, ANTI CLOCKWISE TO ADVANCE.

Yeah, that's how I did it. Seems much smoother now and no pinking that I could hear. I just advanced it as far as I coulod before getting really rough then backed it off a bit to a nice smooth idle (as smooth as it gets with a lumpy cam anyway!)

What fuel do you run? If you use super then it can easily do 8 deg. 4 deg for normal.

Running super... Do you mean cam or ignition? Presume ignition...
