Cabby Cold Start Prob

Hi, the last few cold mornings my 85 Cabby has failed to start.

With the key in the ignition and turned the dash lights come on and the ignition clicks but the engine fails to even turn over.

Then, don't ask why I tried this, but I placed a heater under the engine bay and ten minutes later it fired up first time. It's done this for the last couple of mornings too.

I'm thinking theres a prob with the starter solonoid/motor???

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Cheers.

My caddy has been giving cold start problems hence my checking this thread. I discovered that when a friend moved the car out of the storage barn, the battery leads had only been pushed onto the battery posts. Once tightened, I topped up the battery with a trickle charger. Sorted the non-starting but I still have the mis-fire… I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the damp / soaking wet weather?

Well I finally got around to checking the battery and popped a new one in. Still no joy so I checked all the wiring and all appears fine.

I managed to bust my back over Christmas so haven't done a lot with it but I asked a local garage to have a look at it for me and they picked it up this morning. I let you know what the score is.

Cheers

Is your cabby running properly now the starter motor has been changed?

Yes it is.

But just before the starter motor died completely I got the mixture and idle checked and set up first, to see if that solved what I thought was the cold start problem.

Before this every now and then the engine would cut out coming up to junctions and the like, but now it runs perfect.

Is it a fairly new battery on yours? On one of my previous motorbikes I had the same. And despite using a trickle charger on the battery it still couldn't recover it and the bike ran like a bag of nails until I put on a new battery.

Sounds a bit like contaminated fuel too. Might be worth running some fuel conditioner through it to see if that helps?
