Depending how its been serviced and looked after and driven!! if the mileage is correct? it could either be worn piston rings? or even bores? but its more likely to be valve stem oil seals, these are cheap to buy and if you go to a vw mechanic whos in the know :wink: you dont necesarily need to take the head off to do them you can adapt an old spark plug with an airline fitting connect to an air lead to force air into the cylinder and push the valve so you can remove them, had it done to my old gti like this and it worked spot on, that only used to smoke on tick over though not under power
Or use rope - piston at the bottom - feed in rope - bring piston up to lock the valves
