hi i'm after a new set of pistons to recon my engine and have found a block and pistons on ebay but i'm just wondering what differences are there between the 1.6 and 1.8 blocks ?

Difficult to say whether the block in the link is 1.6 or 1.8, as they look very similar.
He needs to tell you what is cast into the rear of the block (1.6 or 1.8), as this side is not shown in the pics.
If the size is not cast there, he needs to tell you what the diameter of the bore is, in mm. Haynes will tell you which is which, but I don't have my copy to hand right now.

i believe it's a 1.8 block with 81mm bore just don't know if it's compatible with 1.6 bits and bobs
