BIG BANG AND LOSS OF POWER
I also experianced a big bang when at a junction. Not a usual backfire pop but a bloody great BANG. It was so load it sounded like it was inside. As I have no back seats or carpet in at the moment I am just wonder if it was a backfire somewhere i the mid exhaust section. The girl that shares a lift to work with me was bricking herself. ops:
Had my timing set up last weekend so I am ruleing that out.
I am guessing its a fuel pressure problem but I am open to suggestions.
Was going to change all fuel filters see if that helps. Maybe clean out the tank and run some injector cleaner through.
More jobs to do this weekend! But with-out doubt the first on my list is to put a new alternator belt on. The squeel is possible the most annoying sound in the world!!!    Who agrees?
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

Thanks for that
Thinking about your backfire - they can only be caused by fuel in the exhaust manifold/exhaust - this means that the fuel is unburnt. Quite often carbed engines wil pop on overrun as fuel passes through the engine. On injection cars the fuel is actually topped on overrun I believe.
What I'm getting to is either you are getting unburnt fuel through the engine because of spark problems or too much due to a fuelling issue.
Best run through the checks you plan though and I think i remember people with the loss of power at revs on the old forum - woky had that problem I think - Might be worth a quick serch on the old site.
