well as if i haven't had enough problems so far the head gasket blew this morning
quite spectacular as well, luckly i had got the car to my mates house for a check up and whist idling on the drive it blew, the really hot running was proberly a clue it was gonna go.
oh another thing to fix…..still can't be as expensive as my scooby

Seems like everyone here are going through a bad patch with the engines 8O .
At least you will have peace of mind when the timing belts and gaskets are renewed.

yeah i know, but i had already done the belts and didn't really want to do the gaskets but they are 25 years old this year!

Worth doing then irrespective of a head gasket blow out?
If it makes you feel any better the maintenance should outweigh the deprecation on a new carat on average 1.5k p/a.

hmm i like the sound of that 1.5k pa thats a good rate of interest!!!
the new head gasket is on and the engine now runs again but…….
it still seems to run rather hot and also i cant get the idle to come down to normal - its sitting about 1500 rpm with the idle screw right in!!! - it is running a bit of advance but when set to 0 degrees it drives rubbish with no pull at all, the pulleys are all set spot on as well, i am going to look at the injectors next.
:?: any ideas?

Check the 3 way rubber and hoses for split and leaks, other than that it could be running a little rich.

The other thing to check as well as the idle mixture screw at the back of the manifold is the throttle stop screw on the linkage at the top of the manifold.
This is sometimes incorrectly used to set the idle and if set wrongly will prevent the idle from going low enough. I think it should be backed off until its just off the throttle stop then turned in maybe just a half to one turn. Its purpose is to stop wear between the throttle body and the butterfly valve, and the screw setting should just keep it fractionally open(the butterfly valve that is).
Not 100% on this, but have had a similar problem before.
Cheers,
Chris

cheers guys,
as soon as i can i will get to a garage to check the mixture, i'd try to adjust to throttle screw but couldn't turn it (after slackening the holding nut) i have got a spare throttle body so might try that one.

I have recently fitted a Mk2 throttle body to mine and had the same trouble, resetting the adjustment cured it. Loosen the screw until you have a gap, put a thin piece of paper in the gap and turn the screw until the paper just holds, now turn the screw a further half turn and tighten the lock nut, simple.

I wondered what that screw was for, I took mine out altogether. Better put the screw back in tomorrow!
