Attempt no.2

thought I'd change the inlet manifold gasket to see if this helps the lack of idle,  I rounded off one of the manifold bolts  :banghead: (nice idea with an allen key head VW  :y: ), got it out evetually using a star/torx drive..

anyway, while lifting the manifold out I noticed I had forgotten to put a little pipe on the back of the throttle housing which goes to the vacuum unit on the side of the distributor… would this pipe stop the car from idling? anyone wanna try pulling it off and see if they're car idles?

my thought is that there's an air leak in the system which is stopping the sender plate from lifting in turn stopping the fuel to the injector's

It should still idle without that connected…
There are plenty more places to have an air leak though. They can be quite hard to trace!

shhhhh, don't say that.. it's that pipe, it is

hopefully the new gasket will help things out

Phil - Al is right that vacuum pipe shouldn't affect idle - ity is used to advance the ignition at higher revs

ah well, it was good while it lasted

I think there should be a plastic cap on the one way valve thingy mate. The vacuum pipe should go to the back of the throttle body...

Presuming you dont have a single vacuam advance on your dizzy, you should have two pipes, one as you have stated and one to the back of the throttle body.

yep, 2 pipes…  I forgot to connect the one that goes to the back of the throttle body

but it does idle when you take it off moreno?

once I've got the new manifold gasket on I'll make sure this is connected.. got to wait a week though

i dont know if the one that goes to the back of the throttle body is connected but when i take the other one off (the one that goes to the one way valve above the rocker cover) it makes the engine stall.

Ah.. cheers guys, well when I get chance I'm hoping the combination will sort the idling out! still not 100% on the injectors or fuel, I'll go back to that if these don't work!

The idle is effected when you remove the one off the throttle body, it allows un-metered air to pass through.

well, new gasker and that vacuum pipe has been refitted…

now I'm not getting ANY fuel at all, not even to the filter, and the fuel pump isn't really working very well!!  :banghead: , so I've ordered up a new Fuel pump and filter, going to rewire the pump to… but good news is I may be driving a Mk1 sooner than I thought as I may well be getting another one this week
