are there different fan switchs on a 1986 1.8 gti cab

Hi folks posted this in the carb forum as well by mistake ,I have recently bought a 1.8 gti cab 1986 the car had been in storage for a long time and the temperature gauge was getting right over to the right but not all the way but the car wasent over heating the fan was cutting in but what seemed to be late and cools it down a bit but not as much as you you would hope so i changed the thermostat and fan switch flushed the rad and refilled the rad but it does the same thing but dosent actually overheat you can take the cap of the overflow when the guage is hot and it is seems normal no pressure no boiling and the car runs fine ,my question is if i put a different fan switch in with a lower setting for cutting in will this cure the problem or is this normal for one of these cars when i ordered the new fan switch i definetly got the right one but was told there are ones with lower settings No idea! does anybody have similiar experiances would love to hear anybodys opinions cheers

temp prob

hello m8 if you look at front of head jst under plugs you will have two sensors fitted into a dome shaped water attachment with big hose goin to rad other to oil cooler, the smaller sensor with jst one wire with spade terminal slid onto it, this controls your temp gauge, if you start car and remove spade terminal your gauge will fall to bottom, replace this sensor and you should be ok, mines doin exactly the same at mo, goin to get one tomoz shouldnt be more than a tenner, hope this helps m8

replaced the temperature sender which the last poster was talking about and no change however a mechanic friend of mine said this situation is quite normal for one of these cars it is quite possiblle a lower setting fan switch will fix the problem if it is a problem in the first place its not overheating so i suppose leave it unless anybody else has any input into this subject which i would love to hear
