Are 1.6 and 1.8 water pumps the same?

As per the title, I'm wondering if the 1.8 water pump I have to hand is suitable for my 1.6?

Both engines are GTI (i.e. DX and EG codes).

Yep same water pump.
make sure you fit a new rubber O ring between the water pump and engine block and give the engine block face a good clean.

Can you still get the o-ring from VW? If not where's the best place to get one?

I also found a brand new complete pump on Euro Car Parts for ~£30 - are they any good?

I think the o ring is the same size as the thermostat but a new water pump will come with 1 new o ring but you will need another one for the thermostat but if are fitting a new one which I would recommend you will get another new with that. Maybe worth buying a spare as they are only 27p!

buy the whole water pump not the 1/2 ones as you will find the bolts holding the 2 parts will properly shear off or round off when trying to take the old one apart and they can be a pain to seal properly.

The only difference I can think of is the pulley fitting the water pump? They might be different but not sure??

I've been using a Circoli water pump for about 12 months and it's been fine.
