Another timing question

I have never had this problem before and it has got me stumped.

When i check the timing on my car (1.6GTI) the mark on the pulley is blurred, instead of the usual plain white line.

What would cause this?

Maybe i should try that, i was timing of the end pulley.

Can you see the flywheel though? I have set the timing using the flywheel mark initially when i swapped the distributer but then i used the end pulley to adjust to.

I'm sure it means something is fooked when the timing marks appear blurred though.

Well it's either your strobe or some wobble in the timing - maybe hall sensor?

You can see the flyweel marks by removing the plastic plug on op of the gear box.

maybe hall sensor

I thought it could have been that, i will check it with the flywheel tonight.

The engine is probably a little tired as my Girlfriend ran it low on oil………and i've been running it with quite a lot of advance, goes like a rocket but pinks and overruns when you turn it off when hot

I have a 1900 block with new pistons that i think i will put in it this winter.

Great - i've never been able to reliably time off the front pulley!
