Am I wasting my time?!

After spending 2 days to try to get my Mfa to work I suddenly thought to check wether I have the Mfa switch on my gearbox.

Could some one have a look at the following pictures and let me know.

The only wires coming off of my gearbox is a 2 pin plug. I thought the Mfa would have more?

If someone could let me know, that'd be great. I can stop scratching my head trying to make my mpg etc work!

Thanks

Don't think your mpg is read from the box dude..sure it's done with some kind of vacuum affair? I'm no expert but sure someone will put you right..

MFA is measured from your vacum pipe off od the dizzy I think mate.  Moving this to big block engine section to help get more information from those in the know

hi

im no expert either
but i don't think this is correct box for a car fitted with MFA in saying that all the MFA box has that's extra is a switch wire back to the MFA to trigger the MPG analogue gauge when its in fifth.

this should help
Reverse Wiring

switch in the gearbox is the reverse lights switch, mpg is as scotty and spudders say via the vacuum pipe coming from the back of the manifold :D

The gearbox switch is used by the MFA to tell it when its in 5th. Not in 5th and the change up light is tiggered by vacuum off a round thingy with wires and pipes near the dizzy. In 5th and the economy guage works of a vacuum from the inlet fanimold.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

the switch you need depends on which dash cluster you have. if its the early one with the large mpg gauge and shift light, then yes you need the larger multiplug type reverse switch as early-1800 just said. there is no way to get around this without changing the gearbox, unless you short the wires so it thinks the car is always in 5th.

if its a later car without the big mpg gauge then you dont need the multi plug switch, so an easier way would be to just fit a later dash cluster to work around the issue.

other problem is the 1/2 switch, if its a later cluster the switch is on the stalk not the dash, and you need an extra bit of wiring from the switch to the dash. the plug you need is the same as a VW speaker plug, or what you see on the mk2 handbrake and heater light plug amongst others.

if its earlier dash the 1/2 switch is on the cluster and so you dont need any extra wiring.

Thanks John and all,

Just tested all connections and stalk…all fine.
Looks like my dash is buggered!

Anyone have a working mk1 dash with MAF (1990 h GTI cabiolet)????

If I don't have any joy I'll put in a mk2 but would prefer to keep it original.

Can anyone help?

Thanks for all of your advice!
