air filter soaked w/ auto trans fulid

not sure where to ask these 2 questions??  first changed air filter 1.8 red fluid driping from above [inside] air filter housing looks like red trans fluid.  #2 question my milage and speed guage hasnt worked ever  spent the day removing speed and tack cluster to find 2 speed cables. both short cables are fine  replaced the oxy senser because light was on thought this would help my milage..  could not resetting the oxy senser stop the speed guage from working?? or is there something in the counter box broken??  thanks for any help   later butch

Speedo will likely be the gear placed into the top of the gearbox. Undo nut and pull oout cable (carefull not to loose the gear if it's there). If not there go to VW and get a new one. Only a couple of pounds. If I remember correctly it is a white (neural) one you need (if you have a gti anyway).

As for the the oil on the filter, it is unlikely to be transmission fluid. There isn't any way for it to get there. Only way oil could be getting in there is via the breather filter from the top of the rocker cover. This will likely be because of a blocked gauze filter in the rocker cover.

Then the problem probably lies with the gear at the back of the guauge cluster. It wears away over the years and looses connection. Mine is on the way out but only so the odometer doesn't work. Speedo still working for now.

Not sure which white button you are talking about?!
