A few issues guys ...spitting water, White Cream, whisling.

Here I go guys,   any help or advice will be gratefully received, first of all I noticed a whistling sound which isn't there when the car is ticking over, as you drive/accelerate it get worse (sounds a bit like a turbo) I thought the sound was from the water pump so purchased a new one after stripping the old one down and draining the system a few times, anyway put the new one on and the sound is still there, it's not as bad if I loosen the fan belt off, the tighter it is the worse it is.

Next since changing the water I've noticed some cream gathering around the oil filler cap, checked the dip stick and no cream or any other crap.. just oil also there seems to be a bit of water spitting with white smoke out the back which is worse when you first start it.

Another issue is the tappets (Hydraulic) after reading a few threads last night on here many of you suggested putting a ltr of ATF, so today I drained out a ltr of oil and put a ltr of ATF in, tappets sound a little quieter but I've only done about 10 miles.. how many should I do? Before I drain it and put fresh oil/filter in. also which oil would be best ??

Can someone tell me if I need a new engine ??
By the way it's a 1990 Golf GTI cabby. 1800 8v
Look forward to your reply.   :banghead:

First of all what happens to the noise if you remove the belt altogether? Creamy oil at the cap sounds like it hasn't got hot enough to burn any moisture off, once sorted take it a long fast run. ATF, I'd run it for another 20 miles then change oil & filter with a good 10/40, GSF sell Fuchs Titan at a very good price and finally check all the pipework at the rear for leaks or splits, including the coreplugs if possible. Let us know how you get on

cheers

when you say a creamy gathering around the oil filler cap you mean underneath on the underside of the cap ? when you remove it?

and where does the noise sound like its coming from when your in the car

Hi guys thanks for getting back, I've been away with the kids and misus over the weekend, I've dropped the oil and changed it inc the filter, removed the sump before hand and it was surprisingly clean, removed the rocker cover and cleaned any of the cream out, the old oil was also quite clean so I think I'll forget about the cream for now and worry about the whistling.
The sound seems like it's coming from the bottom pulley, I'm no mechanic so you have three pulley wheels, one on the alternator, one on the water pump (Which is new) and the other on the engine block. (it sounds like it's coming from this one.) if I slacken off the fan belt the sound goes away, but the fan belt is slipping, as soon as you tighten it the sound is back… the tighter the louder. Any ideas, I could video it and post a link if that helps any one !!

Cheers lads

Thanks for the reply mate, at the cost of £3.79 new fan belt and that's it, whistleing gone… can't believe that's all it was, I even bought a new water pump thinking it was the bearing ??  not to worry thanks for all your help.

Many Thanks Guys.
