86 1.8 GTI cuts out

Car starts OK, but then if left idling iwhen warm it will just cut out - no ignition lights on dash etc

If i turn off and try to restart it wont go, again no lights on dash'

This has also happened once whilst driving but i managed to jump it.

Any ideas? just put a new battery on it tonight so can't be that.

Cheers

Yeah thought as much, gutted! only had the car 2 days and havn't managed to drive it for more than 15 mins!

Anybody know the cheapest place for an Alternator? would it be GSF?

Your charge light on the dashboard (shape of a battery) should light up if the alternator isn't supplying any/enough charge. Also unusual to loose your dashboard leds in the manner you describe, even with a low battery. Are you saying it always starts ok from cold?

It does seem to start ok from cold as long as i get the ignition lights.

The problem is the ignition lights do not always come on weather the car be hot or cold? i'm thinking dodgy connection to ignition barrel or something?

Anybody any other ideas?

has it had an immobiliser fitted. or worse removed. it may be the connections on that are dead.

alternator was first guess you could check the charging with a multimeter to rule that out. oh and check the connections on the battery are clean and greased. could be a dry connection

Looks like it has possibly has an alarm in the past but this has long been removed.

I will check the ingition wireing etc, as somtimes the ignition lights flicker as if it is a loose connection somewhere?

any common places where the connections brake?
