2l conversion to a 1800dx engine head?

hello,

I have recently destroyed my piston on cylinder 4, so i am in need of help.  I am looking to increase the size of the bottom end 2 a 2l, but don't know which bottom end will fit?  I have been offered a 2E and an AGG bottom end but which one is better.  My old head has had a bit of work done so would like to use this.

I have got another bottom end sitting in my garage but don't know the code, but it seems to have a water inlet going into it, and no where to put the warm up reg.  but my head is the part that ha sthe watre inlet at the moment.  Any advise would be appreciated.

o yeah my car is a 1800 gti 1983 with k jet

you need the audi 9a block or the vw 6a block, with the 2l head gasket you will also need to change the dizzy and get a blanking plate.

The 9A and 6A are 2.0l 16V engines, it would be a better conversion but I don't think you can mate a 16V bottom end to an 8V head (may be possible, though?) There's no worries simply going up to 2.0l 16V though. For the 6A you'd need to transfer sump, inlet manifold and no doubt other more minor parts over. This means you'd probably need to buy a 16V inlet manifold, in addition to the 6A engine. Beware, for the 16V route you'd need to buy another exhaust manifold (the 16V stock manifold doesn't fit into a Mk1) or fabricate your own. Also, if you do this, you'd have to relocate the air box the other side of the car, which also means rerouting fuel lines and moving the washer bottle, etc. ABF is another engine, its 16mm taller and found in Mk3 Golf GTI 16Vs.

You could go seek a 2.0l 8V engine - for example 3A which is found in Audi 80s, or 2E or AGG (found in Golf mk3, and I think Corrado/Passat too). This would make the conversion simpler. 3A is the 'bubble block' engine and is the same height as the original, so no real issues fitting it in. The 2E/AGG is taller, so things like exhaust manifold, bonnet touching throttle body, etc need to be addressed.

This thread is going to help.

If i went to a 16v wouldn't i have to change the wiring? or could i just do a straight fit with the k-jet 16v? i have just done a abf engine in a mk1 cab, it fit but the wiring was long and sourcing the loom and the ecu was a nightmare.

The bottom end i have sitting in the garage has a black unit on the front where my warm up regulator should be looks like it is meant to have a sensor in it or something??? it is from an 8v and all fits together with my head.  Am trying to get pictures to explain further.   :banghead:

use the 2.0l bottom end, 2e and agg is the same really just the 2e is the older of the 2, 16v will be loom and fuellines and manifold at the least, if you fit  2.0l 8v you will need a dizzy adaptor plate and will need to mount the warm up reg somewhere else.

Cheers for that i  didn't know if i could mount the warm up reg somewhere else im sure i can find somewhere.  i will have a go tonight and let you know how it goes.  I got the dizzy with the bottom end so i think i will end up using that one.

3a 16v or totally naive

hijacking this thread, anyone know if a 3a bottom end can be used to turn a Kr16v into a 2litre 16v? or is that just a ridiculous and impossible idea cos they are totally different in terms of outlets and manifolds etc?

I'm a hijacker too……..

I am considering the 2 liter route too.
How much of an issue is the 16mm extra height for the throttle body? Everyone seems to say that these issues 'can be overcome'.
How can they be overcome??
And are there any other issues other than the exhaust manifold? Clash with cross brace, etc?

I'd like to keep the bay standard looking and get good tourque for drivability throughout the range. I'm thinking 2l with some mild head work, mated to a Mk3 Gti 8v box for reasonable cruising revs.
Thoughts / comments???

Thanks
