2.0L Conversion.... Is It Worth It?

Hi all :).

I have a '88 Cabby GTI that is my current project. I've also got plenty of bits laying around from previous cars, including almost a whole MK3 GTI.

I have been looking into the 2.0L conversion, and it looks fairly straight forward. AFAIK all that needs fabricating is a blanking plate for the breather and the adapter ring for the dizzy, which I've found on TSR's website. Plus changing the gear over on the distributor. Is that about it?

My real question is this; I don't really have the money to rebuild the block or anything, it would be a case of making it up as it is. Is it worth it? I don't really have much experience in the area. Would there be more tuning potential in the future?

Cheers,
Curt.

the 2 ltr only produces about 3 bhp more than the 1800 but its well worth doing  the conversion in my opinion without doing any tuning work at all.

Yep, the 2.0 8V in the Mk3 GTI produces 115bhp stock, vs 112bhp for the 1.8 GTI found in an 1988 cabby. But I'm sure with a cylinder head swap (which would include the cam) and setting up the fuelling properly, which includes the WUR mod and using the Audi 5 cyl WUR, maybe even an Audi 5 cyl throttle body, you could see 130-140bhp max.

Okay cheers guys. I think I'll give it a go then. I'm also going to give porting and polishing the head myself, which should save a fair bit of cash and free up some more horses as well.

I will put a project thread up with my progress when I start though, as it may well be an interesting experiment.
