1998 mk1 cabrio 1.8 carb engine running hot

:?   I'm a bit worried as my engine appears to run very hot after I topped up with antifreeze.  I undid the hose under the expansion tank to drain out some fluid (to add anti freeze) & reconnected and topped up but now its running really really hot… the breather from the rocker cover to the air filter box is making little puffy expansion noises too (ooer)  there are no signs of leaks anywhere…apart from some overflow from the expansion tank cap… maybe I put too much in??? can anyone help please

Depending on just how you removed and filled the fluid, which end of the hose, you could have caused an air pocket. That will not allow the thermostat to heat up correctly to open and cause overheating. Lower radiator hose hot?
