well my mk one started well but in the last 3 weeks started making noises nocking round the 4500 mark ive had the engine stripped and now been informed that the big end bearinmg no2 has been rotating in the cuff basigaly ovaling the end of the rod , hmmm heres my problem i dont know what to do , my options as i see it are , :-

1 get the engine re-ground and re-built undoutably the most expensive by far but it gets it back in full working order but i cant afford it at all

2 get a re-con engine ok i have no idea on this one any advise + prices would be good if anyone can recomend somewhere ,

3 get a engine 2nd hand again i wouldnt know where to start looking ,

the one thing i realy dont want to do is scrap it cause its beautifull and ive wanted one for bout 6-7 years now  any way any help advise or recomendations are welcome

You could buy a ?100 secondhand engine, spend ?100 on parts and ?50 on tools. Take the head off. Have a close look at the bores. Take the sump off and the main bearing caps and have a good look at these too. Then recondition the head (strip valves off, decoke around valves, lap them in and refit using new valve stem seals) and refit with a new head gasket. Result? For a couple of days work, and ?250, you have a reconditioned engine. If the engine you buy is too worn in the bottom end, then it might end up costing you ?350.

Depends on your time. money and skill…I would buy a second hand DX engine off this site (or even Ebay) there are always some around, and most folks are genuine enough to tell you if there is a problem with it -  its a gamble, but worth it if funds are short and you want a quick fix…
