1.8 GTI gas flowed cylinder head

Hi guys I'm the proud owner of a Lhasa Green MK1 1.8 GTi which i've owned for 11 years now,and in which time i've been very happy with although nowadays the car is not used as a daily driver spending most of it's time semi retired in the garage although still lovingly looked after,The one and only major problem this car has had is the Head Gasket blowing recently and after stripping it down i found the head to be well and truly corroded,so after spending a lot of time trying to source another one with no luck i decided to replace it with a reconditioned head which had been ported & polished to a very hi standard,it was basically a complete new head apart from the casing which was cleaned again to a very high standard,so after fitting the new head the car fired up no probs, ran o.k and just by reving the engine everything seemed fine, but on road test the engine whilst under load seem's to misfire {hesatate} as if their was'nt enough fuel getting through espeacially anoying when going up a slight hill :(  but when i pull over take it out of gear and rev the engine it revs as sweet as a nut. If any one can shed any light on this problem it would be much appreaciated   .

is the timing correct?

it probably is running a little lean and expect it could do with a tweek on the metering head to get a little more fuel in there

that's as much help as I can be though I'm affraid… my Mk1's been running slightly rich for ages   no matter how much I adjust it I can't get it right!

is the problem consistent or does it get progressively worse?

Hi,the problem is consistant!

really dose sound like a timimg issue. i reckon that when you refitted the timing belt the intermediate shaft rotated a bit, so its firing at tdc or worse after tdc, this would explain why it will freely rev but not give power.

that's likely.
failing the timing, check fuel pressure.

i had this prob when i fittd a port polshied head on a 2litre bottom end, i had it one tooth out  and then i set the dizzy to that, so i re timed it, and then timed it back up with a timing light to 6degrees,
took it up the track and kept backing the dizzy back untill it pinked, then touched it forward untill pinking stopdd! upd the fueling! and it boosted like there was no tomorrow!

mk1 cylinder headache

Hi guy's thanks to all those who replied to my topic dated Jan 04,I now seem to be getting some where with this problem,as you can see i've taken my time to sort this but there seem's to be a bit more enthusiasum about me now summer is here 8) Right i've had the timming sorted and the car now runs slightly better but nowere and i mean nowere near what it should be,but whilst sat trying to figure this out i had remembered that when we put it all together we had a problem with the mk1 injectors fitting as the head is from a early mk2 but we managed to fit the said injectors although not a perfect fit{this is the problem with doing things over a period time you tend to forget what you've done}So my question to you wise people   before i start spending my hard earned IS do you think that this could be the problem  :? .

i had this kind of problem and it turned out to be rust in the fuel tank, had to have a new one but worked treat, rust gets stuck near the fuel pick up in the tank!

Hi mate

Have you checked your vacuum advance? Could be this.

Injectors should fit ok. You can get new injector holders (the bit that the injectors push into that screws into the head) from vw. Did you replace the injector seals? Should do this when removeing/replacing the injectors.
