1.8 GTI 8v engine with Kent Cam

Post

Hi all,

I am currently doing an engine conversion on my mk1.

The engine I pulled out a year ago is a 1.8 8v GTI from a mk2, it is fitted with a Kent cam. It pulled really well when it was fitted.

What do people think this is worth? Would I be better stripping the Cam out and selling it with the pulley by its self, seen these go for like 80quid. Then scrap the rest of the engine. Or maybe just take the head off and sell it as a modified head.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Craig

it will fit the dx if its a later one with hydro tappets, take rocker cover off and check cam caps. if all there its mechanical lifters if 1 missing its hydro. the ev head will fit a dx block too

Will have to check if mines hydraulic is there any other way of telling without having to replace the gasket?

possibly if oyu know the engine number, but then that assumes the head is original…

if you could find the head casting part number for a hydro head that might help.

may as well check anyway, buy a rubber gasket repair kit (with studs) worst case you'll probably fix a slight seep, best case rubber gasket can be reused if you take the cover off only a few days/weeks down the line

Will have to have a look

Will the head need to be removed to fit cam?

nah rocker cover off, cambelt loose/off then undo the caps in sequence shown in Haynes/Bentley. refit cam and everything else reverse of removal. just be aware dizzy can spin free cam off so be sure you line engine to TDC and keep an eye on the rotor arm to be sure it stays roughly at tdc,.  you'll want to fine tune the dizzy timing with the new cam anyway

yeah EV can be either solid or hydraulic depending on the age, all 5 caps = solid
