Engine locks when turning engine over

Hi all,

My mk1 gti has been sat for a couple of years now, the engine will turn over but after about a second or so the engine will clunk to a stop and splutter. I guess its locking? The crank isn't able to be turned by hand either. A friend said it could be a number of things…. lol

Any help would be amazing as I have wanted to get him back on the road since he came off, but havent been able to. I miss him!

Did you take the spark plugs out before turning it over by hand - makes it easier to do, so then you can feel if anything is restricting it from turning it over.

If it has been sat for a long time the fuel could be stale.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lee0, we took a ht lead out, that was all so far. Will take spark plugs out when I next have time and put some fresh fuel in :) will post again with the results! Thank you for your help!

Check all the static timing marks on the engine incase the cambelt has slipped. Don't try and start the car untill you have checked this and turned the engine over a couple times by hand as you may course yourself even more problems.
